ECONOMIC DESIGN

The Barnes Responsible Spend project built a model linking residents’ spending patterns and the survival of local independent businesses. The result showed that if each resident over the age of 18 spends £36 a week in shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, they can help keep these businesses afloat. The initiative is based on the principle that the high streets in Barnes are the focus of the community, and so should be supported by the community for the contribution they make to the appeal of Barnes; as a place to live and work, but also to the value of residential homes. This initiative aims to give residents a greater awareness of the role they play in the local economy and create a sense that the Barnes community could forge their own economic destiny.

MODELLING TO MEASURE IMPACT

Bureau Haus Ltd undertook research into the economic benefits of standards at a firm level for a national standards body. The overall aim of the project was to develop a formula which can illustrate a link between implementation of a standard and a net benefit to a firm. To measure the benefits standards, Bureau Haus Ltd built an Ordered Logistic Regression Model (OLRM) and a calculator to give business owners a sense, in monetary terms, of the benefits of implementing a standard in a particular industry sector.

DEVELOPING E-LEARNING PLATFORM AND CONTENT

Bureau Haus Ltd delivered an e-learning platform with content for a Non-Government Organisation in the justice sector seeking to train professionals in developing countries. A key remit of the project was developing indicators and metrics to measure learners’ performance, and increase the likelihood of course completion.
